A little bit about what you'll find reviewed here

A little bit about what you'll find reviewed on this blog: I believe the best books involve characters you wish you could read more about long after the book is finished. Recently, I've been searching for hidden gems from the past. I read mostly fiction, and I'm a bit of a prude. I don't normally enjoy books with sex or excessive language.

Who I am:
I raised two wonderful girls, and I'm super proud of them. I enjoy reading (of course), sewing, cross stitching, photography and writing. I live in the high desert portion of Washington (which I didn't know existed until my husband and I decided to move here) and have really enjoyed my time out here. I am excited to see what God has next in store for my life!

Full Steam Ahead - Karen Witemeyer

Karen Witemeyer has become one of my favorite authors to read.  In the past I’ve read all of her novels including To Win Her Heart, Short-Straw Bride, Head in the Clouds and Stealing the Preacher.  I’ve also read a novella collection where she contributed called A Match Made in Texas.  The only thing I haven’t read is a novella called A Cowboy Unmatched.  I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read.

Nicole has come home to find her father very ill.  His shipping line needs an heir and with Nicole being his only hope, he wishes to see her settled to someone who can take over before he dies.  A competing family is threatening Nicole’s family over a dagger that is thought to have superstitious properties.  Taking matters into her own hands, Nicole takes the dagger and flees the city.  Danger forces her to alter her plans and end up as a secretary to an eccentric scientist.

Darius is haunted by the past.  He was on a steamboat when the boiler exploded and saw people die.  In particular, the death of a little girl causes him to obsess over finding a safer boiler.  Explosions at the house have labeled him a madman by the townspeople, but memories push him to move forward no matter the consequences.  Until Nicole comes to his door.

Darius is a wonderful character and one I thoroughly enjoyed.  Reading about how Nicole is able to push past his obsession and start to change his heart really got me involved in the book.  Even the supporting characters: Mr. and Mrs. Wellburn, and Jacob – were well developed.  The story line is interesting and the history surrounding little known facts of the steamboat industry were very interesting to me.  As always, a great book by a great author.  Good Book!

*I received a copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
