A little bit about what you'll find reviewed here

A little bit about what you'll find reviewed on this blog: I believe the best books involve characters you wish you could read more about long after the book is finished. Recently, I've been searching for hidden gems from the past. I read mostly fiction, and I'm a bit of a prude. I don't normally enjoy books with sex or excessive language.

Who I am:
I raised two wonderful girls, and I'm super proud of them. I enjoy reading (of course), sewing, cross stitching, photography and writing. I live in the high desert portion of Washington (which I didn't know existed until my husband and I decided to move here) and have really enjoyed my time out here. I am excited to see what God has next in store for my life!

Beyond All Measure (Hickory Ridge Romance #1) - Dorothy Love

Ok, I admit that I was drawn to the cover of this book.  I loved the picture of the young woman with the train approaching in the background.  After reading the summary, I started tracking it.  The first time it popped up at a lowered price, I missed it, but it dropped again so I was able to pick it up.

Ada has little money and no family to help her out.  Answering an ad for a lady's companion, she heads to Hickory Ridge, Tennessee.  Upon arrival, she finds out that her job entails a lot more than she had planned for and wonders how she will ever get her millinery business off the ground.

Wyatt likes what he sees in Ada, but she doesn't trust men.  He runs the local mill and has dreams of leaving and heading back to run a ranch in Texas.  He stays to make sure that his Aunt Lillian is taken care of.  Both Wyatt and Ada wonder what will happen when Lillian is gone.

Ada is a confusing character in some ways.  She doesn't trust men, but she falls in love with Wyatt, even tells him so, but is reluctant to marry him.  I wasn't quite sure why she was so against Wyatt when she knew he was different.  Ada needed to move on, and I wasn't 100% sure what exactly she was holding on to.  The religious aspect of the novel was subtle and the characters didn't seem to have any sort of "a-ha" moment.  They just seemed to deny God at one point and believe later on with no explanation.  These are minor issues in my enjoyment of the book overall.

This is one of the many trilogies that Christian fiction has.  I'm starting to wonder how that happened.  It seems like everything I end up reading is part of a trilogy.  When I read a series that has 4 or 5 books in it, I think that it's out of the ordinary.  Anyway, book 2 is called Beauty for Ashes and it is the story of Carrie.  Book 3 is Every Perfect Gift and tells Sophie's story. Both characters are in book 1 and I'm going to put them on my tracking list. Good Book!
